Horsedrawn
One glance at the 1890 Hearse will send a shiver down the spine. Its ornate filigree work and black sheen dulled with age are testament to its solemn past. The visitor will see many of New Zealand's finest horsedrawn carriages. From the box cart (the forerunner of the station wagon) to a doctor's cart last used by two spinsters to do their shopping up until 1935.

c1860 Phaeton. Named from Greek mythology when Phaeton son of Helious the Son God, drove his father's sun chariot too close to the sun.




On display an 1886 horse drawn drag used extensively as public transport in Canterbury and the West Coast.

The Museums replica Fire Station exhibits an interesting collection of fire appliances including uniforms and memorabilia. The station bedroom comes with emergency fire pole.
